The Benefit Light Series

When I choose a subject to paint, I study the light. The light is the most important thing, it effects everything in the painting. I love the way time, space, and light combine to make specific scenes.

I started the Benefit Light project because the city of Providence, Rhode Island, where I live, had begun putting in LED streetlights. The light from these new lighting fixtures was cold and blue, so different from the old fashioned wrought iron street lights that illuminate historic Benefit Street. The difference in light made a distinict impression on me and I set out to capture the warm orange light and unique location of the Benefit streetlights, in case those were to disappear someday as well. That endevour became a series of over 100 uniquely plein air Providence paintings that make up Benefit Light.
